Magazine Publisher Research

 For this assignment I conducted online research on Dotdash Meredith Publications. Here is what I learned.

     a. Reported a net loss of $145 million. 

      b. Digital Revenue (includes advertising) was $260 million, 53%. Print Revenue (primarily subscription) was $224 million 47%. 

      c. The publisher makes more money in Digital than in Print as well as the assumption that many people likely use physical magazines rather than digital. 

      d. 3.8B was spent with the highest being 1.3B on selling and marketing expenses. 

      e. The publisher has been making less money each year due to the trend of switching towards a digital world. 

      f. The top three magazines for this publication is People, Allrecipes, Better Homes and Gardens.  

     f2. Its mobile web audience for People is 46.9 million while the Allrecipes are at 51.4 million which is higher than numbers in other categories.

PEOPLE’s audience targets women 16-45. 

Allrecipes’ audience targets food enthusiasts. 

Better Homes and Gardens’ audience targets adult women 25-54 

       g. The information on the biggest advertisers is not public. However, technology, pharmaceutical, and retail sectors are among the highest. 

     g2. These advertising agencies may sell medicine, clothing, phones and other electronics. 

g3. The target audience is people who consume their advertisements. 

     g4. The biggest advertiser, being D/Cipher, advertises towards the consumers in order for them to access magazines, statistically the consumers are most likely to view the top 3. 


I also identified three magazines within my genre.


      a. These are the names Cook’s Illustrated, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, Taste of Home, Saveur. 

      b. The social medias all have a link in their bio bringing us to their site with the whole page being about food. 

         c. Only major difference is the name of the magazine and the varying themes. 

       d. It shows many pictures of food as well as opinions of the food, may include recipes as well. 

        e. The presentation typically looks like a well photographed picture of the food in good quality light and sometimes includes a person. Just pictures of food.         

  f. The appealing aspect is the appeal to food in which all of the food looks well prepared and tasty. The unappealing would be the intrinsic dislike for some foods.
